Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 7, 2026
Yumio ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and the controls you have when you use the Yumio mobile app.
Information We Collect
When you use Yumio, we collect the following categories of information. Each category is "linked" to your account — none of it is used for cross-app tracking.
- Account information: your email address, display name, and an internal user ID issued by our authentication provider when you create an account.
- Profile content: your handle, bio, profile photo, dietary preferences, allergies, household size, favorite cuisines, and cooking skill level.
- Food inventory: the items you track, including names, quantities, and expiration dates.
- Photos and videos: images you take or upload within the app (fridge scans, cooked-dish photos, recipe photos posted to Explore, profile pictures).
- Recipes and user content: recipes you save or generate, cooked-dish entries, captions, story notes, and messages you attach when sharing a recipe with a friend.
- Social graph: the accounts you follow and the accounts that follow you, plus a record of recipes you've sent to or received from friends.
- Contacts (optional, with consent): when you tap "Find friends from contacts," your contact email addresses are sent to our server only at that moment to match against existing Yumio users. We do not store them.
- Usage activity: recipes you save, skip, cook, or share. We use this signal to personalize your "For You" feed.
- Purchase history: if Yumio offers paid features in the future, we store the record of your purchases so we can deliver what you paid for. Yumio is currently free; this category will only contain data once paid features launch.
How We Use Your Information
- To provide and personalize recipe generation, food tracking, and the "For You" feed.
- To analyze food images and identify ingredients using AI.
- To send you notifications about expiring food items, if enabled.
- To deliver recipes, dishes, and direct messages between users who follow each other, and to display content you explicitly post to the public Explore feed.
- To improve the app, debug issues, and develop new features.
AI Processing
Yumio uses Anthropic's Claude API for recipe generation, fridge image analysis, and the in-app cooking chat. When you use these features, relevant data (your ingredient list, the dish photo, your message) is sent to Anthropic for processing. Anthropic does not use this data to train its models. Nutrition information is fetched from the USDA FoodData Central public API; no account data is sent to USDA.
Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored on Amazon Web Services in the United States (us-east-1 region). Authentication is handled by AWS Cognito. Photos are stored in Amazon S3 with private access; the app accesses them via short-lived signed URLs. All data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and at rest.
Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with:
- Service providers: AWS (hosting, storage, authentication), Anthropic (AI processing), and Apple (app distribution and subscription billing if/when we introduce paid tiers).
- Other Yumio users: anything you choose to share. When you send a recipe to a friend, your name, handle, and the recipe land in their Friends inbox. When you post a recipe to Explore, it becomes publicly visible to all Yumio users along with your handle and avatar. When someone follows you, your public profile (handle, name, avatar, bio) is visible to them.
- Legal requests: when required by law or to protect users from harm.
Your Rights
You can:
- Access your data through the app's profile and settings.
- Delete your account and all associated data from Profile → Settings → Clear All Data, or by emailing us.
- Choose not to follow anyone, not to share recipes, and not to post publicly to Explore. None of those features is required to use Yumio.
- Block or unfollow other users at any time. Blocked users cannot follow you, see your posts, message you, or appear in your contacts-import results.
- Report content or another user from the app at any time. Reports are reviewed by a human; we'll act on them if they violate our community rules.
- Control notification preferences in the app or in iOS Settings.
If you are in the EU, EEA, UK, or California, you also have the right to request a portable copy of your data, to correct inaccuracies, and to object to certain processing. Email us at hello@cookin.info to make a request.
Children's Privacy
Yumio is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, please email us and we will remove it.
Changes to This Policy
We will post any changes on this page and update the "Last updated" date. Material changes will be communicated in-app.
